First ECW artillery

Here are the first guns for my ECW army; I'll have two to a battery. These are field guns originally painted by David Imrie. I decided to re-base them onto larger bases, to give them a bit more room to "breathe", and so I could add extra crew, a budge barrel and some buckets of water for sponging.

The guns are mounted on the same bases as I'll use for the horse- they take six cavalry in two ranks. You can see where the magnets fit, and the directional arrow that reminds me which way the minis need to face so that the bases can fit together. Later I have some larger siege guns to base, and a small frame gun that will be attached to a battalia.

  1. You and Mr. Imrie make a great team. Displaying ignorance, may I ask the meaning of "budge barrel?

  2. Almost entirely Imrie in this instance! :-) A budge barrel is a barrell used to carry gun powder, with a leather sleeve at the top to stop sparks going in and rope instead of metal hoops.

  3. I assume that you prime your bases (both sides) to avoid warping. Is that correct? Love the overall look. 'Big battalions' always look great. Alas, in order to play with different armies across all periods (ancients to WWII) we have had to settle for smaller units (but lots of them). Ultimately are games have many figures, but in order to accommodate lots of players we need lots of units made up of few figures.

  4. Hi Chris, I usually only prime the top side- they never warp, in any case, 'cos the magnets keep them flat whilst they are drying and in storage. My armies are mostly used for display games at shows and that's why I favour large units. I also have lots of units to accommodate lots of players. :)
